Juan de Torres
He starts dance studies at an early age with classical ballet, contemporary dance, improvisation, choreography and music at L’Ecole de Formation Professionnelle du Ballet Contemporain de Bruxelles, lead by the choreography from Navarra, Karmen Larumbe. He won the Gold Medal at the Prix Français de la Danse and participated through scholarships in the Nikolais – Louis Foundation Company, the New York City Ballet and the Julliard School with Héctor Zaraspe.
His artistic activity as a dancer and choreographer was always related to the name “Larumbe”, first in the Ballet Contemporain de Bruxelles, and then in the Karmen Larumbe Danza Company, established in Spain. As soloist, he has received international recognition from the public and the press, participating in numerous galas and collaborating with artists such as Ana Laguna, Arancha Argüelles, Rita Poolvorde, among others. In 1996, after the death of his mother Karmen Larumbe, he took on the General Direction of Larumbe Danza in Madrid.
Since 2001, Larumbe Danza is part of the program of resident companies, promoted by the Region of Madrid, and sponsored by the Town Hall of Coslada, our venue. He works as choreographer from an early age and has created more than 30 performances, some of them in collaboration with other choreographers and artists of contemporary art worldwide recognition. For more than a decade, Juan de Torres works in different national and international opera productions as a choreographer, with stage directors such as Hugo de Ana, Sergio Renan, Bernard Broca and Henning Brockhaus. She has choreographed pieces for commercials and advertising campaigns, as well as music videos.
As teacher, he has been teaching for five years as professor of contemporary dance, improvisation and rhythm at the Conservatory of Luxembourg, and for ten years at the Professional School of the Ballet Contemporain de Bruxelles. Currently, he teaches masterclasses and lectures at national and international universities.
At company level, he is a promoter of young artists from Spain, promoter of international exchange with similar dance companies, and founder and Artistic Director of the “Spain Dances In …”, a traveling festival that has visited capitals such as Prague, Rome, Warsaw, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, Budapest, Recife, Mexico, Tokyo, Montevideo and Seoul, promoting dance creation from Spain internationally. He’s also the creator of GESTO Street Dance Festival in the City of Torrelodones (Madrid).
At the corporate level, is the current Spokesman of FECED (National Federation of Professional Dance Companies) that he led since its foundation in 2009 to 2015 and was President of Emprendo Danza (Association of Dance Companies) from 2006 to 2015. He is Member of the State Council of the Performing Arts and Music, Member of the International Dance Council of UNESCO and jury member for the National Awards 2009. He speaks for the dance Madrid in forums and debates at national and international, with special effort to the initiative for dialogue, cooperation and exchange, and for the right recognition of the choreographers and dance companies in our society in general and in public administrations.
